Design data, capacity and backup
Start with the recovery outcome before choosing a NASA NAS can improve availability and centralize data, but neither a mirrored drive nor a snapshot is automatically an independent backup. The system begins with the data, the failures it must survive and a restoration that can be proved.
Inventory
Name the data and its owners
List every source, user, application and device that will place data on the NAS. Record which files are irreplaceable, confidential, frequently changed or already stored elsewhere.
- Growth
- Measure current data and keep a separate allowance for versions, snapshots and application state.
- Access
- Map who needs local, remote, read, write and administrative access before creating accounts.
Capacity
Calculate usable storage, not raw bays
Drive count, RAID layout, formatting, reserved space, snapshots and rebuild margin reduce usable capacity. Vendor calculators are planning aids rather than guarantees.
- Drives
- Use the exact compatibility list and firmware notes for the chosen NAS.
- Rebuild
- Keep free space and a replacement-drive plan instead of filling the array to its limit.
Backup
Design a copy the NAS cannot destroy
Keep at least one independently controlled copy outside the live array. Remote exposure, stolen credentials, fire and accidental deletion require different protections.
- Isolation
- Document when the backup is disconnected, immutable or held under a separate account.
- Restore
- Test representative files and application data on a calendar, not only the backup job status.
