Dual boiler or heat exchanger

Choose the heating system from drink volume, temperature control, warm-up behavior, and counter space

Both systems can make excellent espresso and steam milk. A dual boiler gives brew and steam their own temperature control. A heat exchanger uses one steam boiler to heat brew water as it passes through. The practical difference appears in how often you change coffee, how many milk drinks you make, and how much warm-up and temperature management you accept.

Dual boilers make temperature a direct setting

A dedicated brew boiler can hold a chosen temperature while the steam boiler remains ready for milk. This is useful for changing roast levels, making drinks back to back, or turning steam off when only espresso is needed.

A heat exchanger can be simpler without being lesser

A well-designed heat exchanger can deliver strong steam and excellent espresso, especially when the household uses one familiar coffee. The trade is less direct control over brew water and a workflow that may depend more on warm-up state or flushing.

A repeated coffee and drink pattern reduces the value of frequent temperature changes.
Steam priority
A large steam boiler can suit households focused on milk drinks.

Group design and control logic matter more than the heating label by itself.

Make the decision

Compare the first drink and the fourth drink

Heat-up claims often describe one readiness point. Ask when the group and portafilter are ready, how the machine signals a flush, and whether steam performance remains suitable through the number of drinks you actually make.

First drink
Count power-on, any required flush, grinding, preparation, extraction, milk, and cleanup.
Fourth drink
Check recovery, reservoir volume, drip-tray capacity, and how much attention the sequence needs.
Counter fit
Measure depth with the portafilter installed and clearance needed to refill the water tank.
