Filament or resin for the parts you need
Choose the process from part size, strength, detail, cleanup, material handling, and the room around the printerThe useful first question is not which printer has the best specification sheet. It is what the finished part must do. Filament printing is usually the practical route for larger functional parts. Resin earns its additional handling when small detail, surface finish, repeatability, or a validated material is central to the work.
The part
Start with scale, load, and finish
A housing, fixture, helmet, dental model, miniatures, and a presentation prototype ask for different processes. Record the largest dimension, expected load, temperature, chemical exposure, tolerance, and visible finish before comparing machines.
- Larger functional parts
- Filament printers offer larger build areas and a cleaner handling routine across common thermoplastics.
- Small detailed parts
- Resin can preserve fine features and a smoother surface, but the material and finishing process must suit the use.
- Validated applications
- Professional material systems can matter when a part needs a documented mechanical, casting, dental, or biocompatible workflow.
The room
Cleanup and safety are part of the machine
An enclosed filament printer still needs a material-appropriate ventilation and storage plan. A resin setup adds liquid resin, gloves, wash solvent, post-curing, protected work surfaces, spill control, and disposal. Formlabs states that finished prints must be washed and may require post-curing before use.
- Filament
- Plan for dry material storage, hot surfaces, moving machinery, emissions, scraps, failed parts, and the room required to service the machine.
- Resin
- Plan for liquid and resin-coated surfaces, wash solvent, gloves, tank care, post-curing, ventilation, and waste handling.
- Shared space
- A bedroom, family room, school, or office requires a more conservative material and access plan than a dedicated workshop.
The decision
Choose the least complicated process that meets the part
A printer that produces the needed part reliably is better than a more capable process whose cleanup or maintenance prevents regular use. If both processes qualify, compare one complete filament setup with one complete resin setup rather than comparing base printer prices.
- Filament first
- Start here for general prototyping, fixtures, larger objects, and lower-friction home use.
- Resin first
- Start here when fine detail, surface, compact parts, or a specific professional material justifies finishing work.
- Both
- A professional shop may use each process for different jobs. One does not make the other obsolete.
