01

Before the shortlist

The first four answers do most of the work

A useful ranking starts only after the constraints specific to this market are clear.

  1. 01

What sound blank diameter and length, bowl depth, spindle work and outboard or bed-extension work must the lathe actually support?

  2. 02

What is the lowest usable speed, how are ranges changed and do motor, input voltage, reverse and braking fit the work and shop?

  3. 03

Which spindle thread, Morse taper, quill, indexing, chuck, jaws, faceplate, centers, tool rest, extension and stand are included or required?

  4. 04

Who owns unloading, anchoring, alignment, workholding checks, speed selection, face and eye protection, entanglement control, dust, sharpening and service?

Market language

The terms a useful comparison should define

Swing over bed
Nominal diameter clearance above the bed; it does not prove that a rough blank is sound, balanced, mountable or clear of the tool rest and banjo
Between centers
Nominal headstock-to-tailstock distance before allowing for centers, chuck, drill chuck, workholding and safe tool access
Spindle thread and taper
The exact mechanical interfaces for chucks, faceplates and centers; matching a family name does not verify shoulder seating, insert, jaw or load compatibility
Outboard turning
Work supported beyond the normal bed envelope with a documented headstock, extension, outrigger and tool-rest arrangement, not simply a larger claimed swing
