Compare lathe drive, geometry and accessories
Compare speed, spindle, headstock, bed and workholding as one supported systemNormalize the exact machine before comparing accessories. Voltage, motor control, spindle thread, taper, quill, headstock travel, extension geometry and tool-rest post determine which workholding and expansion paths are supported.
Drive
Compare input, range and control behavior
Record voltage, circuit, horsepower basis, belt ranges, minimum and maximum speed, forward and reverse, braking and overload behavior. The NOVA Neptune combines a 115-volt direct-drive system with 100 to 4,000 RPM, programmable ramps and electronic braking, but software does not validate a blank or mounting method.
- Power claims need context
- Input, continuous output and peak motor language are not interchangeable. Work diameter, cut, belt setting, duty and supply voltage shape useful performance.
- Braking changes the load
- Electronic braking can shorten coast-down, but aggressive deceleration can load threaded workholding. Configure it only within the maker's workholding instructions.
Interfaces
Verify every mechanical connection
List spindle thread and shoulder, headstock and tailstock Morse tapers, quill travel, through-bore, indexing, rest-post diameter and extension mounting. A chuck family still needs the correct insert, jaws, seating and rated work size.
- Movement changes alignment
- A sliding or pivoting headstock supports different access than a fixed headstock. Re-seat, lock and verify center alignment after every movement.
- Outboard work needs supported rest geometry
- A swivel head alone is not a complete outboard system. Confirm outrigger, extension, rest reach, base stability and the maker's documented capacity.
Ownership
Price the complete turning setup
Include stand or bench, chuck and jaw sets, faceplates, centers, drill chuck, rests, extension or outrigger, lights, tools, sharpening, extraction, electrical work, lifting and freight. Confirm parts and electronics support for the exact model.
- Service changes with machine mass
- A control board, spindle or bearing repair can require freight, field labor or long downtime. Read warranty duration, exclusions, parts route and who pays transport.
- Accessories do not promise results
- A larger chuck, extension or premium rest cannot guarantee sound workholding, alignment, surface finish, throughput, dust control or a safe outcome.
