Commission the studio monitor system

Verify placement, gain, clocking, calibration, level, mounting and support before relying on it

Commission the delivered pair or array in its final room and signal chain. Reconcile exact model and generation, inspect cabinets and mounts, set geometry and gain, verify every analog or digital path, then measure and save a documented baseline without treating it as a promised listening result.

Install

Place and support the exact cabinets

Use stable rated stands or manufacturer-approved mounting hardware on a suitable structure. Match acoustic axes and distances, preserve port or passive-radiator clearance, manage cables and ventilation and keep heavy lifting or overhead work within a competent installation plan.

Handed systems need an exact layout
Dynaudio LYD 48 and HEDD Type 20 MK2 use left and right cabinet identities. Confirm the intended tweeter or driver orientation before ordering, placing and calibrating the pair.
Side radiators need clear space
Focal Shape 65 has a passive radiator on each side. No rear port can help one boundary decision, but it does not remove side clearance, symmetry or room-mode requirements.

Signal

Witness gain, clocking, delay and wake behavior

Set the source and monitor sensitivity for useful headroom and low noise. Test each input, channel polarity, left-right level, digital clock, DSP delay, limiter, mute, standby and recovery from power and signal interruption.

Digital input requires a clock plan
The JBL 705P and HEDD Type 20 MK2 accept AES/EBU, but connector presence does not verify sample-rate support, loop behavior, clock stability or the downstream control system.
Quiet rooms expose the gain chain
Evaluate hiss, hum, ground paths and standby at the actual listening distance. Owner reports identify tests to run, not population noise or defect rates.

Store the baseline and service boundary

Record serials, placement, angles, distances, input trims, digital settings, calibration files, firmware, software and microphone versions, reference level, support contacts and a repeatable recheck process after room or equipment changes.

Control listening exposure
Maximum output and limiters do not define a safe workday. Calibrate a conservative reference, manage level and duration and follow applicable hearing-health and workplace guidance.
State the commissioning limit
Commissioning can document placement, function and a measured baseline. It cannot guarantee neutral perception, translation, approval, uptime, hearing safety, electrical safety or mounting safety.
