Open, closed or semi-open design

Closed-back circumaural dynamic design with 40 mm aluminum-magnesium M-profile drivers, angled mounting, memory-foam pads and approximately 306 g weight. Similar chassis across Focal lines does not imply identical acoustic loading.

Impedance, sensitivity and source drive

Focal specifies 26 ohms, 100 dB SPL/mW sensitivity, 5 Hz to 22 kHz at +/-3 dB and 0.3% THD at 100 dB SPL. Source noise, current and safe level remain chain-specific.

Isolation, leakage and tracking boundary

Focal documents closed-pad insulation and 23 dBA ambient attenuation in current materials. Frequency basis, head seal and microphone leakage still require direct validation.

Fit, clamp, glasses and pads

Thermosensitive memory foam, mixed pad fabrics and an aerated headband target long work sessions. Face shape, glasses and pad age change bass, high-frequency diffusion and comfort.

Pads, parts, warranty and repair

Focal retains current documentation, North American distribution and support. Confirm replacement pads, cables, driver matching and repair freight because current retail price is not an uptime guarantee.

Hearing-level boundary

Limit sound level and exposure duration and set cue and edit levels with a known reference. Strong isolation, high sensitivity, low impedance, maximum input power and amplifier headroom are capabilities, not safe listening instructions or hearing protection.

No sound, translation, comfort or reliability guarantee

A headphone, target curve, review, fixture measurement, pad, calibration profile, owner report, amplifier, warranty or service plan cannot guarantee neutral perception, mix translation, mastering accuracy, recording success, comfort, isolation, channel matching, reliability, hearing protection or another creative, commercial, health or safety result.

Current verdict

The premium light closed-back critical reference

Lensys Professional is the defended premium closed system for buyers who need strong fit, two cable formats and critical editing capability away from a quiet room while accepting a high price and pad-dependent seal.

Neumann

NDH 20

Best fit
premium high-isolation closed-back reference
Tradeoff
Closed-back circumaural 38 mm dynamic design with spring-steel and aluminum structure, folding cups, memory-foam pads and 390 g weight. Black finish is not treated as another system. Neumann specifies 150 ohms, 114 dB SPL at 1 V, below 0.1% THD at 100 dB SPL and 5 Hz to 30 kHz response. Neumann recommends an amplifier output impedance below 5 ohms and strong crosstalk damping. Neumann specifies more than 34 dB isolation above 4 kHz, not a broadband 34 dB guarantee. Pad seal, glasses and low-frequency room noise remain separate, and it is not hearing protection.

Audeze

MM-100

$399 current U.S. price
Best fit
accessible open-back planar mixing reference
Tradeoff
Open-back circumaural planar-magnetic design with 90 mm Uniforce diaphragm, Fazor elements, steel headband, magnesium yokes and 475 g weight. Planar architecture does not establish preferred sound or comfort. Audeze specifies 18 ohms, 98 dB/mW sensitivity, below 0.1% THD at 100 dB SPL, more than 100 mW minimum recommended power and more than 250 mW preferred. Low impedance demands current as well as voltage. Open grilles intentionally provide no meaningful isolation and leak strongly. MM-100 is not appropriate for tracking around live microphones or use in noisy rooms.

What changed

The product has a history

Older observations stay in the ledger when the current view changes. That lets a buyer tell the difference between an old complaint, an active issue, and a problem that was corrected.

Owner experience

What repeats after the purchase

Owner evidence is retained as a fit, pad, seal, leakage, cable, drive and service checklist for Lensys Professional, not a sound, translation, comfort, defect or hearing-safety rate.

Reports are self-selected and span unlike heads, glasses, pads, listening levels, interfaces, amplifiers, rooms, production lots and service regions. They cannot establish population response, comfort, channel matching, reliability, mix translation, isolation or hearing safety.
SignalWhat owners reportOur readEvidence

pad seal, eyeglasses, short straight cable, coiled cable, headband comfort, street-price changes and repair freight

Self-selected exact-model owners discuss fit, clamp, eyeglass seal, pad wear, tonal change, isolation, leakage, cable faults, driver matching, source drive and service. Reports span different heads, pads, units, levels and chains, so they define acceptance checks rather than population sound, translation, comfort or reliability rates.

Validate both isolation and a familiar mix on the buyer's face before treating a premium closed design as an open-reference replacement

Manufacturer identity, exact current U.S. price, specification or manual, support path, independent measurements or professional editorial and bounded exact-model owner evidence were checked on August 20, 2026. This desk covers current U.S.-supported wired over-ear headphones used for recording, tracking, editing, mixing or mastering across open, closed and semi-open professional or reference branches. It excludes consumer Bluetooth-first and noise-cancelling models, gaming headsets, aviation headsets, in-ear monitors, bare drivers, cosmetic editions, discontinued or used-only models and marketplace-only unsupported products. Preserve exact acoustic principle, driver and generation, impedance and whether sensitivity is stated per volt or per milliwatt, amplifier output impedance, voltage and current, clean headroom, open-back leakage, closed-back isolation basis, eyeglass and jaw seal, headband pressure, weight, ear clearance, pad material and wear, pad-dependent voicing, left-right matching, cable length, cup connector and adapter, included case or alternate pads, replacement parts, warranty, service region and repair freight. Manufacturer frequency range, sensitivity, distortion and isolation claims remain tied to their published method. Independent fixture measurements are fit- and rig-dependent, while owner reports are self-selected. No specification, price, review, target curve, calibration profile, pad, headphone, amplifier, warranty or service plan guarantees neutral sound, mix translation, mastering accuracy, recording success, comfort, isolation, reliability, hearing protection or any creative, commercial, health or safety outcome. Limit sound level and exposure duration; high sensitivity, strong isolation or available amplifier power is not a safe listening-level instruction.
