Build the complete safe wash system
Treat injection, carbon monoxide, shock and runoff controls as part of the purchaseHigh-pressure water can inject contaminated material through skin, gas engines can create fatal carbon monoxide, and wash water can move chemicals into drains. The working system needs controls for all three.
Jet
Prevent high-pressure injury
Never direct the stream at a person or body part and never use a hand to find a leak. Depressurize, shut down and verify zero stored pressure before changing or servicing the fluid path.
- Injection
- A suspected injection injury needs immediate emergency medical care even when the wound looks minor.
- Control
- Keep trigger, guard, hose, fittings and nozzles intact and keep people clear of the work zone.
Energy
Control combustion and electricity
Operate fuel-burning pressure washers outdoors well away from openings and intakes. Follow fuel, hot-surface and fire precautions and never move an operating unit into a garage or enclosed service bay.
- Electric
- Use the manual's GFCI, grounding, circuit and connection requirements and keep plugs and connections out of water.
- Battery
- Keep battery packs, chargers and connections within their water, temperature and damage limits.
Site
Contain debris, detergent and runoff
Identify paint, lead, oil, grease, chemicals and biological contamination before washing. Protect drains, soil, occupants and adjacent property and use the applicable collection and disposal route.
- PPE
- Select eye, face, hearing, hand, foot, skin and respiratory protection from the actual jet, debris, noise and chemical hazards.
- Ladders
- Jet reaction and wet surfaces increase fall risk; use a stable access method rather than casually spraying from a ladder.
