Match air demand, pressure and duty
Size from the actual tools and cycleTank gallons and maximum PSI do not answer whether a compressor can support a tool. Start with delivered airflow at pressure, run time, overlap and recovery.

Tool
Build an air-demand worksheet
Record each tool's required pressure, average and peak SCFM, cycle duration, hose and coupler, then identify simultaneous use.
- Nailers
- Intermittent fastening can use stored air but still needs acceptable recovery between bursts.
- Continuous
- Sanders, grinders and spray tools can exceed the practical duty of small portable compressors.

Output
Compare SCFM at the same pressure
Use the maker's delivered rating at the tool pressure and preserve the test basis.
- Tank
- A larger tank extends a burst but does not increase pump output.
- PSI
- Maximum receiver pressure is storage headroom, not proof of airflow at the regulator.

Boundary
Keep performance conditional
Temperature, altitude, voltage, hose loss, regulator setting, maintenance and tool condition affect results.
- Duty
- Do not infer continuous duty when the manual states a limited running pattern.
- Outcome
- No SCFM or tank claim guarantees tool performance, productivity, finish quality or reliability.
