The terms a useful comparison should define
- Pigment ink
- Colorant particles suspended in a carrier, often chosen for fine-art media and permanence programs; media, profile, storage and test method still govern output
- Dye ink
- Colorant dissolved in the carrier, often used for smooth gloss and lower-cost photo output; fade and water behavior remain ink, paper and display-condition specific
- Black switching
- A printer or driver changes the black-ink path for matte or photo media; some systems have dedicated channels while others consume ink or time during a switch
- ICC profile
- A description of device and media color behavior used by a color-managed application; it does not correct a wrong media setting, clogged nozzle or uncontrolled viewing light
