Choose cross-line, three-plane or rotary geometry
Match laser class and projected geometry to the actual layout taskStart with what must be transferred through the work area. A compact cross can level and plumb one view, three planes can carry references around a room, and a receiver-led rotary can establish elevation across a much larger site. Those are different workflows, not feature tiers.
Geometry
Choose the references the crew must see
A one-horizontal, one-vertical cross suits cabinets, partitions and short transfers. Plumb points add floor-to-ceiling transfer. Three 360-degree planes support room-wide level, plumb and square references. A rotary supplies a moving horizontal or vertical reference that a receiver can follow across a site.
- Intersections are not proof
- A projected cross or plane intersection helps place work, but the tool, mount and structure must still be checked before claiming level, plumb or square.
- Slope needs an explicit mode
- A locked pendulum can hold a line at an angle, while a rotary may offer manual single or dual slope. Neither mode calculates design grade or confirms rise over run.
Range
Separate visible work from receiver work
The Bosch GLL100-42GL has a stated 100-foot visible range and no receiver compatibility. The GCL165-42GL adds receiver-assisted use on its horizontal line, while the GRL2000-40HVK is built around an included receiver and a stated 2,000-foot working diameter.
- Read radius and diameter
- A 2,000-foot diameter means a nominal 1,000-foot radius from the instrument under stated conditions. Marketing and manuals do not always use the same convention.
- Color is not a range guarantee
- Green can appear brighter than red, but ambient light, target surface, line width, weather, pulse mode, detector sensitivity and setup control practical range.
Class
Build eye control into the selection
Most current line lasers in this desk are Class 2. Some long-range rotary systems, including the Bosch GRL2000-40HVK, are Class 3R. Class, access to the beam and the site procedure matter more than apparent brightness.
- Control the beam path
- Use qualified operators, avoid occupied eye level, prevent direct and reflected viewing and shutter or power down the tool when it is not in use.
- Construction layout is not survey control
- No class, geometry, range or accuracy label makes a construction laser a surveyed benchmark or guarantees grade, level, plumb, square, code compliance or finished work.
