Commission and operate a drain camera safely
Control sewage, chemicals, power, retrieval, traffic, excavation and confined-space hazardsA camera makes the pipe visible without making the site safe. Commission the exact kit on a controlled line, then preserve separate procedures for contamination, chemicals, electrical power, hazardous atmospheres, traffic, underground utilities and any confined-space decision.
Prepare
Identify the line and exposure before entry
Confirm access, pipe, pressure, wastewater, temperature and every known drain chemical. Follow the product limits and the chemical maker's safety information before the head enters.
- Treat the assembly as contaminated
- Use appropriate waterproof gloves and splash protection, cover cuts, separate clean and dirty areas, wash hands and disinfect only surfaces and materials approved for that method.
- Never combine moving tools casually
- Do not run a cable machine, flex shaft or jetter against the inspection rod unless both exact procedures expressly authorize the sequence.
Operate
Control cable, power and the work area
Stabilize the reel near access, keep slack and recoil away from people, maintain dry footing and monitor placement and use specified batteries, cords and GFCI protection.
- Stop before the camera is stuck
- Abnormal resistance, a buckling cable or a lost guide is a stop signal. Retrieval may require another access, professional pipe work or excavation.
- Waterproof is not explosion-proof
- Unless expressly classified, the system is not intrinsically safe and cannot clear sewer gas, low oxygen or an unknown atmosphere for equipment or people.
Boundary
Keep the operator out of confined spaces
OSHA identifies sewer systems as potential permit spaces requiring competent evaluation, atmospheric testing, controls, attendants, communication and rescue planning where entry applies.
- The video feed is not atmospheric testing
- It cannot measure oxygen, toxic or flammable gas, issue a permit, ventilate the space or authorize an improvised rescue.
- Commission without promising outcomes
- Test insertion, image, recording, sonde and retrieval, but do not guarantee visibility, passage, exact depth, diagnosis, repair scope, reliability or code compliance.
