Market guide
Start with signals, references and channels
Define the measurement before choosing bandwidthThe useful oscilloscope begins with the signal, edge, duration, electrical reference and simultaneous channels. A high bandwidth label cannot make an unsafe probe connection or reveal an event that the acquisition setup misses.
01
Signal
Describe the waveform and event
Record amplitude, expected frequency content, edge time, repetition, event duration and how rarely the fault occurs.
- Bandwidth
- Use a rise-time and harmonic budget rather than matching only the nominal clock frequency.
- Duration
- Memory and sample rate must preserve the needed time span with adequate points on the event.
02
Channels
Count simultaneous observations
Include analog rails, clocks, digital lines, current, differential nodes and any RF or bus correlation that must share one timebase.
- Tradeoff
- Some scopes reduce sample rate or memory per channel as more channels are enabled.
- Mixed signal
- Digital pods, logic probes and decode licenses may be separate options.
03
Reference
Resolve ground and voltage first
Identify earth-referenced, floating, differential and isolated measurements before selecting probes.
- Probe
- The scope, probe, attenuation, category, common-mode range and connection method form one input system.
- Boundary
- A waveform cannot by itself prove a circuit safe, diagnose a machine or authorize energized work.
