Market guide

Start with the circuit, hazard and measurement

Define the work before selecting a meter

The correct instrument begins with the circuit location, available energy, environment and required measurement. A familiar brand or high CAT label cannot authorize live work.

01

Circuit

Map the measurement location

Name source, distribution, branch, load, maximum voltage, prospective transient environment and whether de-energized testing can answer the question.

Category
Match the complete meter, terminal, lead, tip, fuse and accessory to the named measurement category and voltage.
Current
Direct current inputs create a different fuse, jack and time-limit hazard from a clamp accessory.
02

Task

Name the measurement and conditions

Specify DC accuracy, AC bandwidth, crest factor, current, resistance, temperature, capacitance, frequency, continuity, LoZ, low-pass filter or logging needs.

Counts
Display resolution is not complete accuracy, calibration uncertainty or safety.
Waveform
True RMS remains bounded by frequency, crest factor, range and signal level and does not replace waveform analysis.
03

Work

Start with the safe-work method

Qualified-person rules, de-energization, lockout, proving, PPE and approach boundaries govern the task before the meter does.

Prove
Use the required known source or proving unit before and after an absence-of-voltage check.
Boundary
A reading does not diagnose a machine, certify a circuit safe or guarantee a correct repair.
