Compare audio-interface protocols, DSP and expansion

Compare current drivers, digital I/O, clocking, routing DSP and software ownership on one system boundary

Normalize the host, sample rate and monitoring path before comparing interface families. USB, Thunderbolt and Ethernet can each support professional work, while driver quality, routing design, digital modes, DSP capacity, software licensing and recovery determine whether a particular system fits.

Protocol

Separate connector shape, transport and driver

Confirm whether the exact model uses USB audio, Thunderbolt or network audio, which cable is included and which current operating systems are supported. Benchmark the same representative session rather than ranking protocols from theoretical bandwidth.

Thunderbolt is not generic USB-C
Apollo Twin X DUO Gen 2 requires a supported Thunderbolt host, UA software and a valid cable path. A computer with a USB-C socket but no supported Thunderbolt path is not compatible host evidence.
Network audio adds another clock domain
Neumann MT 48 U can use USB or RAVENNA and AES67, with optional Dante through a distinct firmware and license path. Switches, PTP leadership, credentials, channel licenses and fallback must be designed.

Expansion

Calculate digital channels at the working rate

Map ADAT, S/PDIF, AES, word clock and network channels in each proposed sample-rate state. S/MUX reduces optical counts at higher rates, and one optical connector can change format or direction by mode.

A headline total includes conditions
UltraLite-mk5 combines physical analogue paths with ADAT and S/PDIF for its advertised totals. The useful count depends on sample rate, optical mode, clock source and CueMix routing.
Clocking needs one written owner
RME Babyface Pro FS has optical expansion and internal clocking tools, but the connected converter still needs a defined master, supported rate and recovery test. Better clock language does not remove system configuration.

DSP

Distinguish monitor routing from plug-in hosting

Record which processing runs in hardware, which is monitor-only, which can print, how much DSP is available, whether the host can operate offline and which account or license controls each function.

Finite plug-in DSP is a session resource
Apollo Twin X DUO Gen 2 supports low-latency Console and Unison workflows with finite DUO processing. Plug-in model, channel count, sample rate and software version change the usable load.
Routing depth can outlive the DAW only when saved
TotalMix FX, CueMix and MT 48 internal mixers support substantial cue and monitor control. Verify stored state, local control, account behavior and recovery instead of assuming routing software is a redundant recorder.
