Commission the professional audio-interface system
Test the host, every physical route, digital clock, cue mix, firmware, power and safe level behavior before productionCommission the delivered interface in the final computer, rack or desk and with the real cabling. Record exact model, firmware, driver and software versions, then witness every required input, output, clock state and recovery path before the return period ends.
Install
Verify the exact rack, power and cable package
Inspect the unit, supply or mains lead, rack support, ventilation and connector access. Label analogue, optical, coaxial, BNC, DB25, MIDI, USB and Thunderbolt runs and keep strain, trip and accidental-disconnection risks out of the working area.
- Expansion cabling is part of the system
- Scarlett 18i20 4th Gen needs the correct optical and clock plan before its maximum digital counts become usable. External preamps and converters are separate equipment.
- Dense rack I/O needs a service path
- Apollo x8p Gen 2, Fireface UFX III and AudioFuse 16Rig can involve optical, BNC, DB25, MADI, MIDI and many analogue lines. Preserve ventilation, cable labels and access for replacement or troubleshooting.
Witness
Record every route and failure test
Measure stable operation at the intended sample rate and buffer. Record each preamp and input mode, phantom switching, every output and cue, loopback, digital lock, clock loss and recovery, saved mixer state, direct recording where provided and host sleep or restart behavior.
- Test limits rather than assistance labels
- Auto Gain, Clip Safe, recalled gain and direct monitoring can reduce setup work, but they cannot correct microphone placement, recover analogue overload or guarantee a usable take.
- Keep one representative latency baseline
- Store computer, operating system, driver, port, DAW, buffer, sample rate, plug-in load and measured round trip together. A number without that basis cannot diagnose a later change.
Handoff
Store ownership, safety and recovery boundaries
Retain serials, receipts, firmware and driver installers, account owner, license details, routing exports, clock diagram, channel labels, support contacts and a repeatable test session. Document which connected-data and telemetry choices apply to the studio.
- Control monitoring exposure
- Headphone and monitor output capability is not a safe operating level. Begin muted, manage level and duration, follow manual power and phantom sequences and use intact grounded equipment on stable support.
- State the commissioning limit
- Commissioning can document function, latency and recovery on one system. It cannot guarantee sound quality, compatibility, uptime, hearing or electrical safety, data integrity, productivity, client approval or a production result.
