Choose an audio interface by host, I/O and monitoring
Match the computer, physical sources, preamps, cue outputs and location before choosing an interface tierBegin with the session that must work. A bus-powered two-input desktop, a four-preamp monitor centerpiece and an eight-preamp rack solve different host, cabling, cue and expansion problems even when their product pages use the same USB-C connector shape.
Host
Name the computer path before the channel count
Record the exact computer, operating system, port, adapter or dock, current driver, sample rate, buffer and DAW. USB-C can carry USB 2, USB 3, Thunderbolt or power, so connector fit does not establish protocol or compatibility.
- Portable systems still have a power budget
- Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen, Audient iD14 MKII and Apogee Duet 3 can use host power in supported states, but a phone, tablet, hub or adapter can change available current and cable behavior.
- Latency is a complete path
- Driver, buffer, sample rate, computer load, DAW, plug-ins and direct-monitor routing all affect what the performer hears. A protocol or minimum-buffer claim is not a universal round-trip result.
Sources
Count physical connectors and preamps separately
List every microphone, balanced line source, instrument and loopback source that must record at once. Then map gain, phantom power, pad, line and instrument mode, front-panel overrides and input headroom to the actual sources.
- Loopback is not another socket
- Scarlett 2i2 and SSL 2+ MKII can expose software loopback channels, but those channels do not add an external microphone, preamp or connector.
- Optical input changes the expansion direction
- Audient iD14 MKII can add incoming ADAT channels at base rates, but it has no optical output. The external preamp, optical cable, clock ownership and rate belong in the purchase plan.
Monitoring
Draw every speaker and headphone destination
Count main and alternate speakers, headphones, independent cue mixes, talkback, mono, dim and source switching. A second headphone socket or four line outputs are useful only when their routing and level controls fit the session.
- Physical controls represent different workflows
- SSL 2+ MKII emphasizes direct-monitor blending, four balanced outputs and two headphone paths. Duet 3 emphasizes compact touch control and DSP through a breakout cable, with an optional dock changing ergonomics rather than channel capability.
- Price the complete listening chain
- Add monitors, headphones, balanced cabling, stands, a dock or adapter, the media device and any required software. No converter, preamp or monitor route guarantees sound quality, translation or client approval.
