Compare analogue, streaming, corrected and tube amplifiers
Compare like-for-like power, signal paths, room correction, optional modules, heat, service and ownershipIntegrated amplifiers can share a product category while asking their owners to manage very different systems. Normalize the loudspeaker and level requirement first, then compare the exact signal path, module contents, accounts, correction workflow, heat and service obligation.
Architecture
Compare the path, not the label
Class AB, Class D, digital and tube architectures describe implementation families, not a guaranteed sound. Compare continuous load support, input conversion, bypass behavior, idle heat and the serviceable parts of the exact chassis.
- Minimal and modular solve different problems
- Rega Elex Mk4 keeps a bounded analogue and S/PDIF path. NAD C 399 adds modular expansion, but the base chassis price does not include every MDC2 BluOS-D or Dirac function.
- Tube ownership is physical
- Rogue Cronus Magnum III adds output modes, transformer taps, bias checks, consumable tubes, hot surfaces and lethal stored voltage. Those duties matter more than a generic tube-versus-solid-state slogan.
Correction
Treat room measurement as commissioning
Record microphone contents, measurement positions, target curve, correction range, subwoofer handling, saved profiles and bypass behavior. Correction can manage selected response problems but cannot repair placement, noise or a damaged loudspeaker.
- RoomPerfect is a system choice
- Lyngdorf TDAI-1120 combines its digital signal path, microphone workflow, saved voicings and subwoofer setup. The result depends on measurements and targets, not the feature name alone.
- Optional correction changes the invoice
- NAD C 399 needs the exact MDC2 module and license state for BluOS and Dirac functions. Compare base and configured packages separately.
Service
Price the ownership mechanism
Include modules, microphones, external streamers, replacement tubes, dealer setup, shelf and ventilation, network support and regional repair. A long warranty provides a remedy under terms, not uptime or parts availability.
- Heat changes placement
- Elex Mk4 and Cronus Magnum III both need open ventilation, while the tube chassis also needs overhead clearance, burn control and a cage decision around children or pets.
- Software life and hardware life differ
- C 399 and TDAI-1120 can remain useful through local inputs even if a service changes, but only if the owner verifies that fallback and retains reset and configuration records.
