Market guide

Choose an integrated amplifier by speakers, room and sources

Match the loudspeaker load, listening distance, source map and operating style before comparing amplifier tiers

Begin with the loudspeakers and room, not a watt number. A modest amplifier on efficient speakers at a short distance can have more useful headroom than a much larger chassis driving a difficult impedance curve in a bigger room. Then draw every source and output the system must actually support.

01

Speakers

Describe the real loudspeaker load

Record sensitivity, nominal and minimum impedance, manufacturer amplifier guidance, listening distance and desired level. Compare continuous power only when load, channel count, frequency range and distortion basis are stated.

Nominal impedance is a starting point
Yamaha A-S801 publishes different continuous and dynamic figures and has explicit A, B and A+B load rules. A four-ohm label does not reveal every frequency-dependent current demand.
Headroom belongs to a room
Hegel H190v offers more current and output margin than Cambridge AXA35, but room distance, speaker sensitivity and program peaks determine whether that margin is useful.
02

Sources

Draw the input and output map

List line sources, turntable cartridge, television, computer, streamer, Bluetooth device, headphones, subwoofer and any recorder or external power amplifier. A connector is useful only when its format, level and control path fit.

Analogue simplicity can be complete
AXA35 supplies line and moving-magnet phono inputs but no DAC, network endpoint or dedicated subwoofer output. Price every external function the household still needs.
One-box systems still have boundaries
Marantz MODEL 40n combines phono, digital inputs, HDMI ARC, HEOS and a subwoofer output, but it is not a multichannel receiver and does not supply measurement-based room correction.
03

Ownership

Choose how much software belongs in listening

Decide whether streaming services, accounts, apps, firmware and room measurement add useful control or unwanted dependence. Preserve a documented local path and a reset plan when network operation matters.

Offline is a real feature
AXA35 and the analogue side of A-S801 retain core operation without a cloud account. External streamers then carry their own update, privacy and service boundaries.
Connected features need an exit path
MODEL 40n and H190v should be tested for wired or wireless recovery, local input operation and reset behavior before the return period ends.
