Compare sensing and response before apps

A useful water-protection shortlist begins with the sources that can leak and the response required. Flow, pressure-wave, meter, ultrasonic and direct-water sensors observe different parts of the event.

Response

Choose alert-only or automatic closure

Decide whether the system should notify, close the main, close an existing valve or isolate one appliance.

Automatic
A closure command can fail mechanically, electrically, hydraulically or because the event was not detected.
Alert
Notification still requires a person, access and a safe response plan.

Sensing

Map observable and blind areas

Record how each system detects water, flow or pressure and which branches, exterior taps, appliances, drains and non-potable sources bypass it.

Learning
Inferred-flow systems need a representative learning period and reviewed thresholds.
Point sensors
Direct sensors need enough devices in places water will actually reach.

Scope

Keep the hazard boundary visible

A shutoff does not repair a pipe, drain standing water, stop sewer backup, remove mold or make hot, contaminated or energized water safe.

Water source
Some events continue downstream of the valve or come from drains, roofs, groundwater or stored tanks.
Outcome
No system guarantees detection, closure, notification, prevention or an insurance result.
