Verify wiring, settings and safe fallback
Commission every stage and auxiliary transition before enabling automationA thermostat purchase is complete only when the exact wiring, transformer, equipment type, stage logic, heat-pump orientation, fan control, delays, limits and local fallback have been tested against the equipment manuals.
Wire
Create an exact before-and-after record
Turn off HVAC or circuit power, photograph terminals at both ends, label conductors and record transformer voltage, adapters, jumpers, accessory assignments and old installer settings.
- Protect transformers and boards
- An R-to-C short, crossed transformers or an unsupported external supply can damage controls. Stop when conductors or equipment identity are uncertain.
- Treat line voltage separately
- Electric baseboard and floor controls need breaker isolation, load and conductor verification, grounding, box fill and applicable GFCI or wet-area requirements.
Configure
Match equipment protections before convenience
Set O/B, fuel, fan, compressor minimum-off time, stage delay, balance point, auxiliary lockout, dual-fuel transition, floor limit and accessory interlocks from the exact system design.
- Test every operating mode
- Witness heat, cool, fan, each stage, auxiliary and emergency heat, humidification or ventilation and a safe return to idle without trusting only an app icon.
- Native safeties remain authoritative
- A smart control cannot replace combustion, refrigerant, condensate, overcurrent, heater high-limit, smoke, CO or freeze protection.
Handoff
Preserve local control and service ownership
Record model, settings, account owner, installer access, utility enrollment, warranty, support route and a manual recovery sequence outside the app.
- Review automatic changes
- Keep learning, geofence, room priorities and demand response off until manual staging and schedules work predictably.
- Do not promise the outcome
- No thermostat, sensor, ENERGY STAR record or commissioning test guarantees comfort, even rooms, savings, reward eligibility, reliability or equipment life.
