Build the environmental gradient
Heat, light, humidity and airflow are one habitat systemThe same lamps behave differently under mesh, inside a solid top and in a cold or dry room. Choose the enclosure and environmental equipment together, then verify conditions at the animal's level with suitable instruments.

Heat
Create a controlled gradient
A basking surface and cool retreat need enough distance between them. Heat sources require thermostatic control where appropriate and guards against contact.
- Measure
- Check surface and air temperatures in occupied zones.
- Fail safely
- Place probes so displacement does not create uncontrolled heat.

UVB
Distance and obstruction change exposure
Mesh, reflector, lamp age and mounting distance affect usable UVB. A bright habitat is not necessarily an effective UVB habitat.
- Match
- Use species, lamp and enclosure guidance together.
- Replace
- Record lamp age and the manufacturer's replacement interval.

Air and water
Humidity without stagnant air
Solid PVC retains warmth and moisture. Screen releases both. Vent placement, substrate, water and room conditions determine the actual balance.
- Observe
- Measure across the day and after misting.
- Adjust
- Change ventilation and moisture gradually while watching the animal and surfaces.
