Choose passive stereo speakers by room, distance, placement and load
Start with the room, listening distance, placement, bass target and amplifier loadThe room and amplifier narrow the speaker market before finish or driver material. Map listener distance, wall and corner clearance, support height, desired bass and safe level, then compare the electrical load the amplifier must actually drive.

Room
Draw the listening geometry
Record speaker spacing, ear distance, wall distances, furniture, reflective surfaces and allowed support footprint.
- Standmount does not mean small system
- ELAC DBR62 and Polk R200 need two rated stands, floor area, cable routing and tip control in addition to the cabinet pair.
- Floorstanders still need air
- Fyne F501E and KEF R7 Meta require plinth, spike or foot setup and placement testing rather than automatic wall proximity.

Load
Match the amplifier to the curve
Use nominal and minimum impedance, sensitivity basis, room distance and desired headroom together.
- Sensitivity bases differ
- A voltage-based figure can imply more watts into a lower impedance. Do not rank loudness from the headline number alone.
- Clipping is a system risk
- A modest amplifier driven into clipping can damage drivers. More rated watts also do not define a safe listening level.

Bass
Choose the low-frequency plan
Decide whether the main pair carries bass alone or hands off to one or more subwoofers.
- Extension is not in-room response
- Port tuning, boundaries and seat position change bass. Use placement and measurement rather than a single low-frequency number.
- A subwoofer changes the system
- Add crossover, phase, level, placement and integration duties to the budget instead of treating a sub as an automatic fix.
