Metal-oxide VOC, eTVOC and gas-index channels respond to mixtures, humidity and rolling baselines, may cross-react and cannot identify a source or specific compound; even a named low-cost formaldehyde channel needs interference and method scrutiny. NDIR CO2 can drift, and automatic baseline correction assumes periodic exposure near outdoor background. CO2 is an occupancy and ventilation clue, not proof of clean air, infection risk or safety. Radon decisions require the named averaging period and confirmation appropriate to EPA guidance. Site monitors in representative occupied air away from vents, windows, heat, direct sun, humidifiers and immediate sources unless testing that source. Nearby outdoor data adds context only when time, distance, weather and source differences are retained. No monitor identifies a source, diagnoses health, certifies ventilation or regulatory compliance, clears a space as safe, or replaces certified smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms. A monitor does not clean air, dehumidify a room or control HVAC unless a separate reviewed system does that work.
