Site the station before choosing sensors
Map exposure and maintenance access before comparing station packagesA home weather station measures its exposure, not an abstract neighborhood. Walk the property first. Roof heat, trees, walls, pavement, irrigation, splash, mast height and safe service access can matter more than another sensor channel.
Exposure
Map the surroundings of each observation
Temperature and humidity benefit from representative shade and ventilation. Rain needs a level, open catch away from splash and obstruction. Wind needs open exposure above nearby turbulence. One location rarely satisfies all three ideals.
- Document compromise
- An integrated array simplifies installation but may put temperature on a sunny roof or wind too close to a building. Record the actual height, surface and obstructions.
- Preserve service access
- A high mast can improve wind exposure while making gauge cleaning, battery replacement and storm inspection unsafe or unlikely. Maintenance is part of data quality.
Sensors
Buy the observations you can maintain
The Ambient Weather WS-2902D combines cup wind, vane direction, tipping-bucket rain, outdoor temperature and humidity, UV and solar estimates. The WS-5000 uses ultrasonic wind but still requires distinct rain, temperature and humidity maintenance.
- Included and expandable differ
- Lightning, soil, leaf, air-quality and extra temperature channels may need separate sensors, radios or hubs. Verify exact generation compatibility and package contents.
- Sensor method changes upkeep
- Cup and vane assemblies have moving parts. Ultrasonic wind avoids those parts but still depends on clean transducers, power, exposure and manufacturer limits.
Safety
Treat the mast as outdoor infrastructure
Select a stable mount clear of overhead utilities and climbing hazards. A conductive mast, roof edge, ladder and approaching storm create electrical, fall and lightning exposure that no station rating removes.
- Do not service in storms
- Plan inspection and lowering methods in fair conditions. Follow local structural, grounding, electrical and property requirements rather than improvising on a roof.
- Personal is not official
- Good exposure improves usefulness, but a home station does not become an official NWS, FAA or climate observation or guarantee a forecast, warning, insurance or safety outcome.
