Install, verify and maintain the station
Commission exposure, power, radio and records, then keep them observableA useful handoff records where each sensor sits, what it measures, how it is powered, where readings travel and who maintains it. Commission the physical station and its data path together, then preserve the original readings before applying corrections.
Install
Record the physical and radio setup
Level the rain gauge, orient direction correctly, secure the mast, keep temperature shielding ventilated and document heights, surfaces, clearances and nearby obstructions. Pair only the intended U.S. radio-generation components.
- Test before raising the mast
- Confirm sensor reception, channel identity, battery polarity, console or gateway pairing, Wi-Fi band, account access and a plausible first reading at ground level.
- Separate power dependencies
- Record outdoor solar and replaceable cells, console adapter and backup limits, gateway or router power and any cellular plan. A battery symbol does not promise uninterrupted logging.
Verify
Compare observations without hiding exposure
Let the station settle, inspect physically and compare temperature, pressure and rainfall with appropriately exposed references over time. Preserve factory baselines and explain every applied offset rather than tuning one afternoon to a distant app.
- Check rain mechanically
- Confirm the collector is level and clear, the tipping mechanism moves freely and splash or overhead obstruction is absent before changing a calibration factor.
- Read wind in context
- Low placement and nearby structures can suppress or distort wind. A nearby airport or roof station is not a direct reference when exposures differ.
Maintain
Keep a station and data log
Schedule rain-gauge cleaning, wind and shield inspection, battery replacement, solar-surface cleaning, mast and cable checks, account review and exports. Record outages, relocations, firmware changes, corrections and part replacements.
- Retire implausible data
- Flag periods affected by blockage, icing, dead batteries, construction, relocation or failed radio links. A continuous graph is not evidence of continuous quality.
- Retain the observation boundary
- The maintained station reports its own exposure. It cannot guarantee a forecast or warning, represent another property or become an official NWS, FAA, climate, legal or insurance observation.
