Digital resistance or physical weight

Choose from coaching, load, feel, movement range, service, power, membership, and long-term independence

Digital resistance can select weight automatically, change force during a repetition, and keep training history. Physical stacks and plates give a familiar feel, open-ended equipment choices, and usefulness that does not depend on an account. Neither approach is inherently better. The right branch follows from how the household will train.

01

What changes

The resistance system changes the routine

Tonal, Speediance, and VOLTRA I use motors to create cable resistance. Tempo watches conventional dumbbells and barbells instead. REP Ares 2.0 and Force USA G20 use plates or weight stacks and remain independent of a coaching service.

Digital cable
Fast weight changes, small increments, eccentric or variable modes, automatic tracking, power, software, and electronic service.
Coached free weights
Familiar physical load with visual feedback, but the included weights may set a ceiling and the coaching still belongs to a membership.
Physical rack and cable
Barbell, stack, or plate training without an account, with more room, assembly, mechanical inspection, and manual tracking.
02

Choose from training

List the lifts before the equipment

Write the movements that must work, the current working load, expected progression, preferred grip and stance, and whether two people need to train at once. A total resistance number can mislead when the machine splits it across arms or uses a 2:1 pulley ratio.

Strength ceiling
Compare the usable resistance for the actual movement, not only the largest number on the page.
Movement geometry
Cable height, width, bench position, bar path, low row, lat pulldown, and lower-body setup decide exercise quality.
Coaching need
Programming and progression can create adherence, but they should not be confused with a guarantee of safe technique or a professional assessment.
03

Long ownership

Decide what must still work without software

Tonal retains basic lifting after membership cancellation but removes most intelligence and content. VOLTRA I keeps all seven on-device modes without a subscription. Tempo's feedback is tied to membership. Physical racks and stacks keep operating without an account but still need cables, pulleys, hardware, lubrication, and inspection.

Account boundary
Record what remains after cancellation, loss of internet, a phone change, or a service change.
Repair boundary
Name the cable, battery, motor, screen, pulley, upholstery, and labor terms separately.
Exit path
Wall removal, moving, disassembly, resale, transferability, and the delivery route matter before purchase.
