Size from load, temperature and test basis
Match standardized capacity to the real spacePint capacity is measured at a named condition. A cool basement, open stair, water entry or saturated material can create a very different load from the test room and from a square-foot headline.

Load
Find and reduce the moisture source
Identify rain, groundwater, plumbing, open soil, wet materials, outdoor-air leakage and seasonal conditions before sizing equipment.
- Bulk water
- Stop leaks and standing water rather than asking a portable appliance to keep pace with them.
- Zone
- Measure the connected air volume, doors, stairs and airflow rather than using floor area alone.

Rating
Use one current test basis
Compare current DOE or AHAM pints per day under the same temperature and relative-humidity conditions.
- Legacy
- An older 70- or 30-pint product name may correspond to a lower capacity under the newer test basis.
- Temperature
- Cooler air reduces extraction and can trigger defrost even when the compressor is operating normally.

Choose recovery and maintenance goals
Separate the initial wet-room recovery from the steady seasonal load and monitor with an independent humidity check.
- Heat
- A refrigerant dehumidifier adds sensible heat to the space while removing water.
- Boundary
- No capacity or room claim guarantees a humidity deadline, drying result, mold remediation, structural result or health outcome.
