Match the arm, cartridge, phono stage and grounding
Compare geometry, compliance, stylus service, MM or MC loading, balanced paths and grounding as one chainNormalize the pickup and phono chain before comparing decks. A factory-fitted moving-magnet cartridge, an adjustable arm without a cartridge, an internal MM or MC stage and a balanced low-output moving-coil package impose different geometry, gain, loading, cable and service decisions.
Arm
Preserve geometry and available adjustment
Record effective length and mass, mounting distance, overhang, offset, headshell, counterweight range, tracking-force system, anti-skate, VTA and azimuth. Fixed settings constrain cartridge choice rather than making setup irrelevant.
- Fixed and adjustable arms create different upgrade work
- U-Turn Orbit Theory arrives with a fitted 2M Blue on the OA3 Pro and no routine arm-height or azimuth adjustment. Audio-Technica AT-LP7 and Technics SL-1200GR2 offer broader height and headshell adjustment that must be set correctly.
- Balanced output does not fix geometry
- Pro-Ject X2 B provides adjustable VTA and azimuth plus RCA and balanced mini-XLR outputs. Cartridge alignment, tracking force and anti-skate still belong to the mechanical setup.
Cartridge
Match mass, compliance, output and stylus service
Identify whether a cartridge is included, its body height, mass, compliance, output, recommended tracking force and stylus or rebuild path. Recalculate fit after a cartridge, headshell, mat or spacer change.
- No cartridge means an unfinished purchase
- SL-1200GR2 includes its arm and headshell but no cartridge. The cartridge, stylus, alignment tools and compatible MM or MC phono stage are additional decisions, not optional refinements.
- Moving coil changes service and gain
- X2 B includes a low-output Ortofon Quintet Red moving-coil cartridge without a simple user-replaceable stylus. Its output requires suitable MC gain and loading, with future rebuild or replacement planned.
Phono
Trace gain, loading, cable and ground
A cartridge produces a phono-level signal that needs equalization and gain. Document whether the deck exposes phono or line output, which MM or MC load is selected, whether balanced topology is preserved and where the ground path begins and ends.
- A switchable stage has two distinct paths
- AT-LP7 includes a switchable internal MM or MC stage and direct phono output. Use one intended path and do not feed its line output into another phono input or cascade equalization accidentally.
- Grounding is an installed-system test
- Orbit Theory, SL-1200GR2 and X2 B use different arm cables and phono arrangements. Connect the documented ground, separate phono leads from mains supplies and diagnose hum one change at a time.
