Commission the premium turntable system
Verify alignment, tracking, speed, isolation, grounding, record care, power and service before valuable playbackCommission the exact invoiced deck, arm, cartridge, power supply and phono stage on the final shelf. Preserve transit hardware and packaging, inspect the stylus and platter, then document geometry, tracking, speed, hum and feedback with clean expendable records before playing valuable material.
Setup
Level the deck and document cartridge geometry
Install platter, belt, mat, headshell, counterweight and cover only as the current manual directs. Set overhang and offset, tracking force and anti-skate, then verify VTA, azimuth and cue height where the exact arm permits them.
- Factory-fitted still needs verification
- Fluance RT87 arrives with an AT-VM95ML, and Rega Planar 3 RS arrives with an Nd5. Shipping, cartridge fasteners and final support can still change level, force, alignment or channel continuity.
- Dealer-supported packages need component records
- Clearaudio Concept Signature U.S. package retains a named arm and power supply but no cartridge. Keep the componentized invoice, arm mounting values, cartridge setup sheet and service responsibility.
Measure
Witness speed, isolation and signal behavior
Verify every required speed with a method whose basis is recorded, then listen for channel loss and hum at low volume. Test cueing, end-of-side behavior, footfall and acoustic feedback without treating a phone app as traceable laboratory calibration.
- Speed control needs a loaded baseline
- Concept Signature uses optical control, Planar 3 RS uses an external Neo supply and X8 B uses electronic belt-drive control. Record method, belt state and stylus load because control architecture does not guarantee every sample indefinitely.
- Mass does not remove furniture
- Pro-Ject X8 B uses a heavy damped platter, while Planar 3 RS pursues a light rigid plinth. Both need a suitable shelf, cable clearance and a feedback test with the intended loudspeakers and subwoofer.
Handoff
Store record care, power and service boundaries
Retain serials, receipts, cartridge and stylus identity, setup measurements, speed baseline, phono settings, cable and ground diagram, regional power details, cleaning method, stylus and belt service plan, warranty, dealer contact and all transit packaging.
- Protect the sharp stylus and records
- Lock and guard the arm before moving the deck, keep children and pets clear, handle records by safe surfaces and never test with a cracked or dangerously warped disc. Begin signal tests at low amplifier volume.
- State the commissioning limit
- Commissioning can document setup, speed behavior, hum and feedback on one installed system. It cannot guarantee sound quality, speed accuracy, reliability, stylus or record life, hearing safety, electrical safety, compatibility or resale.
