Integrated or split heat-pump water heater
Decide where source air, cold exhaust, condensate, sound, refrigerant and freeze risk belongIntegrated and split systems move heat from different places. The decision is partly a building-systems decision about source air, cooled exhaust, humidity, condensate, sound, line routing, outdoor temperature and service access.
Integrated
Keep the heat pump and tank in one room
An integrated unit is usually a simpler equipment package but needs the specified air volume, temperature range, clearances, filter access and continuous condensate path.
- The room supplies the heat
- Cooling and dehumidifying the source room can be useful or harmful depending on climate, season, room size and nearby heating equipment.
- Ducting has limits
- Use only approved inlet or exhaust configurations and static-pressure limits. Ducts can change performance, sound and pressure relationships.
Split
Move source air and compressor sound elsewhere
A split system separates the storage tank from an indoor or outdoor heat pump and adds water or refrigerant routing, controls and freeze or weather boundaries.
- Outdoor does not erase climate limits
- Ambient range, defrost behavior, snow, drainage, line length, elevation and freeze protection remain exact-system requirements.
- Installation becomes more specialized
- Some systems use water lines while others require qualified refrigerant work. The exact architecture controls piping, charging, commissioning and service.
Ownership
Compare maintenance and repair paths
Filter, condensate, anode, tank, mixing valve, compressor, fan, controls and connected services have different intervals and service providers.
- Tank materials change service
- Glass, stainless and cement-lined tanks and sacrificial, powered or no-anode designs have distinct water-quality and maintenance boundaries.
- Warranty labor may be separate
- Confirm local authorized service, sealed-system capability, parts, travel, labor, tank removal and who owns a split-system diagnosis.
