Choose the electrical and recovery architecture without assuming plug-in means drop-in

Voltage is only the first boundary. Circuit sharing, resistance elements, compressor power, tank size, mixing, inlet-water temperature and household peak draw determine whether a replacement can recover without running out of hot water.

Circuit

Identify the exact electrical branch

Record voltage, breaker, conductor, receptacle, other loads and whether the manufacturer requires a dedicated or permitted shared circuit.

Shared does not mean unconstrained
A shared-circuit model is engineered around a limited current budget and still needs the listed branch, receptacle and load conditions.
Resistance behavior changes recovery
Some low-amperage designs omit or restrict electric resistance backup, while conventional 240V hybrids can add substantial element power.

Delivery

Match recovery to the peak-hour draw

Compare rated volume, first-hour rating, operating modes, compressor recovery and element or mixing behavior under the expected inlet-water temperature.

Larger storage can compensate
A larger shared-circuit tank may cover an ordinary peak by storing more water, but it does not create fast recovery after depletion.
Modes are operating choices
Heat-pump-only, hybrid, high-demand and electric modes trade energy, recovery, sound and sometimes room cooling differently.

Conversion

Price the actual replacement work

A plug-in gas replacement still needs safe fuel decommissioning, vent changes, plumbing, pressure relief, drain pan, condensate, air volume and permits.

Do not reuse a questionable receptacle
Have the branch, grounding, protection and shared loads verified against the exact instructions and local code.
Keep service local
Confirm who can diagnose controls, compressor, sealed system, tank and anode before selecting a new or contractor-only platform.
