Compare receivers, firmware and remote control
Keep lab numbers attached to a usable operating workflowReceiver measurements are valuable when their method and operating condition are visible. They do not replace ergonomics, filtering behavior, firmware, software, service or the antenna and noise environment.
Receiver
Use measurements for the problem they test
Dynamic-range and sensitivity results describe defined test conditions. Compare architecture, filters, overload behavior, close-spaced signals and receive paths only against the intended operation.
- Ranking
- Never convert one receiver column into a universal radio ranking.
- Paths
- Confirm whether dual receive, diversity or SO2R works on the required bands and antenna ports.
Control
Rehearse local and remote operation
Test front-panel speed, CAT, USB audio, LAN or Wi-Fi, logging, digital-mode software and recovery after a computer or network failure.
- Licenses
- Retain any SmartSDR or remote-software entitlement and upgrade cost.
- Security
- Use a documented remote-access design rather than exposing a station service directly to the public internet.
Change
Treat firmware as part of the radio
Read release notes, back up settings, preserve a known working version and verify accessory compatibility before an update becomes part of the station.
- Service
- Confirm regional repair, shipping, parts and expected support life.
- Proof
- Run the intended mode at realistic duty cycle into a proper load and antenna system before the return period ends.
