The software cost after year one

A practical way to compare hardware, software access, memberships, computers, and unlock fees over five years

The price on the hardware is rarely the price of the system. Some launch monitors include practice data but charge for simulated golf. Others separate ball data, club data, courses, and third-party connections. A useful comparison puts every required piece on the same timeline.

01

Build the total

Use the setup you will actually own

Start with hardware, then add the computer or display, annual software, one-time unlocks, courses, adapters, protective equipment, and any data package needed for your practice. Treat a free first year as a discount, not the normal annual cost.

Year one
Hardware, required computer or display, enclosure, mat, projector, first software payment, and installation.
Years two through five
Memberships, software plans, course purchases, replacement hitting surfaces, and warranties or service where relevant.
Exit cost
A transferable permanent unlock can preserve resale value. An account-bound plan may not.
02

Current evidence

Public plan pages can disagree

Bushnell currently publishes different Launch Pro prices and Gold-plan amounts across its public category, product, and setup pages. SKYTRAK's current annual memberships run from Essential at $99.99 to Elite at $599.99. FlightScope includes Mevo Gen2 core data and eight E6 courses without a required annual plan, but advanced data remains a separate purchase. Garmin's own manual confirms that Home Tee Hero requires a Garmin Golf membership.

Record the check date
Software access changes more often than the physical measurements, so it needs a shorter freshness window.
Name the required tier
Do not compare a basic practice tier with a competitor's full simulation package.
Keep conflicts visible
When first-party pages disagree, the correct market answer is uncertain until checkout or direct confirmation resolves it.
03

The comparison

Five-year cost belongs beside the feature list

Annual plans can reverse the order suggested by hardware prices. The right output is not one universal cheapest option. It is the total for the practice-only buyer, the simulated-golf buyer, and the owner who values a permanent unlock.

Practice buyer
Ball and club measurements, session history, video, and export matter more than a large course library.
Simulator buyer
Course access, multiplayer, putting, graphics, computer requirements, and third-party software support become part of the product.
Long-term owner
Use realistic years of ownership and include the likely resale effect of subscriptions or unlocks.
