Temperature, power and chamber size
Let clay, shelf area and the available circuit narrow the kiln marketThe right kiln repeatedly reaches the heatwork required by the clay without making every load awkward or wasteful. Temperature rating, chamber geometry and site power must agree before controller features matter.

Heatwork
Choose from the clay and glaze schedule
Cone describes heatwork over time. A kiln advertised for a peak cone may have a different comfortable repeated duty, especially as elements age.
- Routine
- Name the highest cone fired regularly, not once.
- Margin
- Ask the maker about repeated duty at that cone and voltage.

Capacity
Use shelf area and piece dimensions
Cubic feet hide whether a wide platter, tall sculpture or ordinary mug load fits. A deep kiln can add reach without adding useful shelf area for the work.
- Layout
- Draw routine pieces on the available shelf shapes.
- Cadence
- Estimate weekly loads and acceptable firing frequency.

Power
The nameplate and building must match
Voltage, phase, amperage, breaker, wire and receptacle are configuration-specific. Similar model names can ship with incompatible electrical requirements.
- Quote
- Give the electrician the exact ordered nameplate data.
- Do not adapt
- Do not solve a kiln mismatch with an improvised plug or extension cord.
