Mount, optics, guiding, filters, focus, dew, power and software in one planA modular camera price is rarely the system price. A smart telescope includes more of the chain, while a traditional GoTo telescope may still need an entirely different mount for long exposures.

Spend toward tracking before focal length
A stable mount with appropriate payload margin usually improves more images than a larger optical tube on an undersized mount.

At the telescope
Focus, dew and filters are operating systems
Temperature changes focus. Moisture ends sessions. Filters can help or create halos and color work. These are normal parts of the rig.

- Plan movement and strain before adding automation.

At the computer
Capture and processing are separate skills
Acquisition software can automate a night while calibration and processing determine the final image. Storage and a capable computer belong in the budget.

- Estimate one season of raw and processed storage.
