Let the targets set the optical system
Aperture, focal length and sensor choices for the Moon, planets, nebulae and galaxiesA telescope can be excellent and still be wrong for the intended target. Wide nebulae need a different field from planets, while faint small galaxies ask for both tracking and image scale.

Wide sky
Broad nebulae reward a broad field
Compact smart telescopes and short refractors can fit large targets and reduce tracking demands. Light pollution and filters remain part of the result.
- Check
- Compare the actual field of view with a target simulator.
- Do not infer
- More magnification is not more useful sky.

Planets and Moon
Resolution, seeing and focal length matter
Planets are bright and small. Aperture, atmospheric stability, collimation and high-frame-rate capture matter more than wide-field live stacking.
- Visual
- A larger stable optical system can show more when seeing allows.
- Imaging
- Planetary capture is a different camera and processing workflow.

Faint small targets
The mount must carry the image scale
Longer focal length magnifies tracking error, wind and focus drift. Do not choose the optical tube without a realistic mount and guiding plan.
- Payload
- Use an imaging payload with margin, not a visual maximum.
- Site
- Match exposure strategy to sky brightness and travel.
